Does the age of the photographer matters?

This question was recently posed by a photographer to other photographers. The majority of photographers think that age does not matter however; some believed that it does and others believe that it depends on the genre of photography.
Those involved in architecture thinks that this type of photography is better served by photographers with more experience as it takes time to know where the shots are and following through with corporate clients becomes easier with experience. Whereas some believe that 25-35 year old photographers will relate better to high school seniors.
One photographer said that he was sent a prospective client by a former client who wanted to get some shots done for a modeling portfolio. He met with her and they spoke for about 30 minutes. At the end, she told him she did not think they were a good match because it was "just too creepy" posing for someone old enough to be her father. This exchange had another photographer wondering if these aspiring models think that all fashion photographers are in their 20s and 30s. He continued to say that yes, most of the models are very young but many of the top designers, photographers, editors and other creatives have been around for years and that it takes time to build a career and reputation.
My philosophy is that sadly, age does matter to some clients and this is not exclusive to photography. If a photographer's portfolio attracts someone, then that should be the main criteria for hiring that photographer.

High Cost of Wedding Photography For A Few Hours Work

I recently had a conversation with a client regarding wedding photographer’s hourly rate. This client felt that wedding photographers were grossly overstating their value for just a few hours’ work.
As the average person who works a “9-5” every day and becoming more proficient at their task, they expect to be rewarded for their expertise and so do photographers, but with major differences.
For someone working in an office, your employer will provide everything that is needed for optimal operation of the office and that will include the computers and necessary software.
As a photographer, we must supply everything that is needed to do our job. Our cameras and lenses are top of the line. We must be able to capture every significant moment of your wedding day perfectly, no matter how poor the lighting may be because you expect your photographs to be a fair representation of what you are seeing. In addition to cameras and lenses, we must purchase flashes, memory cards, batteries, backup devices, etc.
Prior to your wedding day, we must make sure that all equipment is in proper working order and all batteries are charged and ready to use. We will visit the house of worship if that’s being used, scout nearby park for photographs and also visit your reception venue. There are agreements (some may require amendments) . If your photographs are being presented online, a wedding gallery must be prepared for you.
Once your wedding day is over, your photographs need sorting and editing. This process is now being done on computers. We must therefore own a computer, monitor, printer, wi-fi, high speed internet, editing software and also acquire the skills needed to operate these via classes and workshops.
So, in order to have your day appearing to be just a few hours’ work, there is a lot that goes on before and after your wedding in order to give you the kind of photographs and album that will last a lifetime.

What Products Should Your Wedding Package Contain?

Quite often, the first two questions that brides ask, whether on the telephone or via email are what are your wedding packages and the cost of each package.

I try to remind each bride that they are all unique and that at Glennola Photography we pride ourselves in catering to your individuality. We urge each bride to come and visit us, see our products and then together, determine the products that best fit their desires.

Over the years, I have photograph weddings from traditional to gothic with varying packages. So, here is my question to all brides, what are the products you would love to have or wish you had in your wedding package?

Choosing Your Wedding Photographer

You are now engaged, Congratulations! Now what?
Planning a wedding can be overwhelming and you may not know where to start searching for the right photographer. A good starting point is contacting family and friends who have recently been through this process, look at their photographs and solicit their experiences with their photographer(s).
You have seen your wedding photographs in your mind’s eyes for some time and now you need to find the photographer who will make it a reality.

With the onset of Digital photography, there are more wedding photographers today than ever before. Should you then use an established studio or a freelance photographer (small, sometimes home studio)? They both have their pros and cons.
An established studio will have many photographers at their disposal (some on staff, some freelance) that they can call upon in the event that the assigned photographer is unavailable on your wedding day. A freelance photographer may or may not have an arsenal of photographers at their disposal.
On the other hand, a freelance photographer may be more flexible and may be able to give you a more personalized service and in some cases, a better package than some studios.
Some freelance photographers may also work part time for established studios. You should never therefore assume that bigger is better.

Although studios have set packages, inquire if you must select the studio package or can one be customized only for your needs. You may not need everything in a package thus reducing the cost or on the other hand, you may need just a little extra.

In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, some studios may limit the amount of printing that they do. Instead of providing proof prints some will have an online gallery only, some will produce only proof books while other may do both a gallery and book(s). If that is important to you, then your studio should reflect same.

When interviewing for a photographer, it is of the utmost importance that the photographer’s style is compatible with your ideas. Ask to see complete albums and not just an album/portfolio of, the best. If possible, see proofs and how those proofs were transformed into the bridal album. When you find that photographer’s work that matches your style, you should then inquire if that photographer is the one who will shoot your wedding.

If an engagement session is planned, ask that your wedding day photographer also shoot your engagement. In any event, it is imperative that your talk with your wedding day photographer prior to your wedding and let your photographer know the things that are important to you. In addition, this meeting, whether in person or via the telephone will allow you to get some sense of how the personalities will co-exist.
